Were pretty experienced at assembling furniture. Most of our stuff is from Ikea, and when it wears out, we usually replace it with...stuff from Ikea. So weve assembled A LOT of furniture over the years. We chose this bed for a stupid reason: we could get it shipped by Prime, and not have to drive to Ikea! But also because reviews of other products seemed quite positive.
The bed is assembled now, holding a Tempur/Pedic twin Original Bed mattress, and its sturdy, with no wobbling, and supports our 11YO with ease. We purchased the one with the desk, rather than the one without, because it seemed like the extra cross/bracing would come in handy, and from the looks of things, it helps. We did not put the keyboard tray on, but otherwise it looks just like the picture (DS even asked for lime green sheets).
Where I take off a star is for the assembly instructions. We had a lot of trouble at the beginning, because the paper made it look like we were putting parts together backwards. Pretty much we had to abandon the paper for the first few steps and work it out by walking around the room, holding the pieces up and trying to figure out where theyd be after assembly, so that we wouldnt make a mistake and have to undo everything.
Once we got the four corner posts in place, everything was smooth sailing, except the clips to hold the bed slats in place were effing difficult to put into the little slots. We ended up using one of the desk brackets to push them into position.
In the end it took two adults nearly three hours to assemble (including the walk around and figure things out part), which to me is just too much. I would order this bed again, if I needed one, because its a quality item...but Id try to pay a couple friends to assemble it for me!
My experience was very similar to many others. Shipping was quick despite the 100 weight. Previous reviewers were right on the money warning me about getting the H piece upside down, so I dodged that bullet. I did get another of the bottom cross bars upside down, but that was quickly obvious as soon as I tried to mount the additional two feet on the bottom cross bars. Assembly took me about 2/1/2 hrs. I was mostly slowed by having to lock in the 44 cross slats. I guess my fingers arent as strong as others, as I had to use various methods to insert the locking tabs (to hold down the slats). I tried hammering, but broke several of the locking tabs. I then did a lot of them using wood (to protect the bed from marring) with vise grips. That was slow. Finally, the best method I found was to fully engage one side of the tab, then to push the opposite end (with a piece of wood), slightly bowing the tab before it snapped in. Since you end up having to put in 88 of these tabs, getting a fairly quick means of doing these tabs would have saved me some time. I finally figured out the latter method at the halfway point, after which the remaining tab locking went fairly quickly.
Overall, I am very happy with the product. Looks good, is quite sturdy, and seems to be well designed. My 7 yo daughter and 5 yo son love it!
The Box came damaged but the contents were all there and were fine. I was able to assemble this alone but it would be MUCH easier with an xtra set of hands.
The instructions are clear and all of the tools are BRILLIANTLY labeled.
I purchased the InnerSpace? Sleep Luxury Mattress along with this Twin Loft Bed. Please note that I purchased the Twin XL and not just the Twin mattress. The Twin XL seems to be 1/2 inches too big, but to me that is perfect. The Twin XL is 80 long and the Twin is 75 long.......if I had bought the Twin, there would be a gap and to me, that gap would be unacceptable.
The Mattress is a match made in heaven for this loft bed and it is only 6 inches thick.
The only downside would be the ladders....they hurt my daughters feet when she climbs them. Another reviewer suggested using water pipe insulation....Seems like a great idea. Will try it.
This is an outstanding product, worth the medium price for the engineering. I ordered this based on a similar product I purchased in 1995, and the improvements in design are extraordinary. It went together much more easily, and has significantly better structure, including mattress support and headroom. (The packaging alone is a work of art.) Not cheap, but neither is it too expensive for what you get. It will definitely last.
Im a football player in college that bunks with another player in a dorm. I weigh 240 lbs and my buddy weighs 225 lbs and this bunk bed doesnt even move or wiggle getting on and off the top or bottom. Also you want to go with a Lucid 10 inch extra long twin mattress. Not only is it the best sleep, but you can fit it in the bed area and it fills up the bunk all the way. It also makes it silent when one person gets up during the night and you cant even tell anybody is getting up. The length of the bunk bed is about 78 and the foam mattress is 80 that is another great thing about foam it squeezes in nicely and gives you every inch the bed can give you for the taller person like myself. Im 63 and have more than enough room.
Two years later bunk bed has been used a ton still with the 2 twin xl lucid 10 memory foam mattresses. Not even a hiccup or a squeak. Bunk is still strong with top bunk player is at 250lbs and on the bottom at 265lbs. Two big boys and the this bunk is great. Im sure that the memory foam is a big help to the incredible silence of the bunk. The setup I used and left in my review has to be one for the ages, affordable, unbelievably comfortable, strong, silent and both on at the best price. Enjoy with confidence.
Pros:
Practical, no waste of space.
Solid and well built. Limited squeaky noise when person on top bunk moves around.
Top bunk can fit an 10 thick mattress (we used a memory foam) with enough rail room (4 height) to not worry about rollout.
No bunky board needed (but I recommend it if you are using memory foam mattresses). We used half inch plywood and wrapped it up with saran wrap. It cost about $20 each (cut at our local Lowes) and provides a complete support, dont pay those over priced bunky boards.
Top bunk appears to be able to support at least 200 pounds with no problem.
Cons:
The rods on the ladder is really hard on the feet, although my kids said they were fine with them, I wrapped them up in half inch foam padding and that helps. The ladder runs straight up, not a slanted one like some others. This will cause you to put up more effort in climbing.
There is no entry point for the top bunk, you have to climb over the rails to get in. I dont quite understand the reason for this, most other bunk beds provide an entry point. This may not be a problem for kids, (mine were a little afraid at first, but adapt to it quite quickly) but maybe an issue with adults.
Other considerations:
No styling, but personally, I like it simple.
I have an 11 memory foam on the bottom. While sitting down, there is about a 2 head clearance (Im 54 tall). Since a persons height are not all in the upper torso, I think a 57 person sitting on the bottom should be fine. If you only use a 10 mattress, that is another inch.
I am no handy man, but I didnt find this bed to be too difficult to put up. It is time consuming, it took a little over 3 hours and I did have my brother helped me hold up a few things at times. Comparing this to another bunk bed we bought, assembly was a breeze.
We got the white one at $199 back in August because it was $50 cheaper than the black one.
This is the other bunk bed we bought, prior to this one, that I would NOT recommend:
[...]
Conclusion:
I removed one star because of the no entry for upper bunk and the vertical ladder.
My kids love this bed, but not as much as the other bunk bed, but that maybe because of styling.
It is simple, sturdy, space saving, and cheap. 4 qualities that I liked.
For $199 (at the time of purchase), I think this is a steal.
I highly recommend this.
I purchased two mattresses that had linked with this bed Signature Sleep 8 Inch. This is a twin bed, but the mattresses are full. Even some of the reviews refer to them as twin. It will cost me $150 to return them. Something is not right with this.
Just what I was looking for. I bought the bunk beds two years ago for my teenage sons, who were thirteen and fourteen at the time. Two years later, its still just as sturdy as the first day. The white metal I thought would show everything is easily wiped down. Excellent strength and easy clean/up. Cant go wrong.
I ordered this bed for my daughter she picked it herself and We put it together in less than 3hrs. well my husband did put it together in less than 3hrs...I did helped reading the instructions though...lol But after WE finished OMG it looked so awesome and so not cheap looking for the price I thought it was going to be more like the ones you find at walmart but NO this one is a better build....LOVE IT and My daughter LOVES IT more and it is for her so I DO RECOMEND THIS BED. NO CONS

Great experience given assembly caveats

Wasnt what I was looking for
I was looking for a futon bunk bed for kids and i almost bought this one thinking it was a futon on bottom.
No thrill but sturdy, highly recommended.
