Ultimately, it's a good height and depth, with good utility. It feels pretty sturdy once assembled. We have not installed the additional supports around the top half and it seems fine. I used wood glue on the two halves to strengthen it, but left the glue out at the mid-point for future disassembly.

It's been a few weeks, and if we keep it closed, there is a noticeable paint smell once opened. Letting it air-out for a while still has not resolved this.
One shelf in the top portion is not movable, which presents an obstacle, though it contributes to the piece's strength.
The rails for the drawer do not allow it to come out as much as we'd like. It's still functional, but doesn't feel very free.
