One must press the underside metal movable hinge to ratchet the adjustable side down, first press firmly (on two sides for the back rest at the same time) and pull the back rest piece in the opposite direction before ratcheting it to the flat position. The armrests have only one hinge, the same technique applies. I did not like the feeling that my finger may have been pinched, luckily nobody was injured
Okay, so this is just day one. But a Ive got to say. I opened the box ready to spend an hour wrangling wrenches and screws and parts into a futon/esque shape. BUT I was so pleasantly surprise to find one wrench and 12 screws. Two for each leg. And done. Super easy! Seems pretty comfy! We bought this for the kids room that may double as guest room someday. So the faux leather was perfect for wiping kid mess off of! So far, Im stoked about this futon. Great buy. Oh! And it was delivered almost a week early! Best deal for a very nice

Looks great, comfortable, easy switch from sofa to bed. Only negative is size. Sleep on diagonal or feet hang off edge.
