Im 54 with some joint problems, so Id been worried about whether I could manage the bed assembly. It was not too difficult. The box in which the parts are shipped weighs over 60 lb so I didnt try moving the whole thing up stairs, I opened it downstairs and carried the parts upstairs. The instructions were very clear and the quality of the fit of the parts was excellent. One person can assemble this. There was one portion of the assembly that required matching rows and rows of dowels with holes and whacking them to get them seated, which was frustrating and fiddly, a second pair of hands would probably have helped. The instructions call for a screwdriver but your wrist and elbow will thank you for using an electric drill with a screwdriver attachment instead. Several critical joints of the bed are held together in tension by a nifty bolt unit that is tightened with a hex wrench (included). Total assembly time was about 90 min.
I did not apply any finish, the bare wood looks and smells good. Some of the pieces (slats) had knots or other minor flaws, but these did not seem to affect the mechanical strength of the pieces and besides, theyre under the mattress. The bed is sturdy--no rocking or squeaking. I tightened up the bolts about 4 weeks after assembly, and most of them had very little play.
