In the picture it appears to be a hard looking leather, but its very soft. The seat is cushy and I had no trouble pushing it back or sitting upright. Assembly recommends two people but I had it together alone in about 5 minutes. No tools req. arrived a week earlier than promised. Perfect for my teenager.
